British literature

I would like to speak about British literature and most significant writers of British history. Literature is almost always influenced by historical, political and social features of the period. As time went by, literature reflected the opinions and ideas that people had and the situations they were in. It could be invasion by other nations, war, social pressure, injustice and uncertain future which influenced many famous authors. These and many more concepts are regular themes appearing in English literature.     During centuries in Britain many great writers, poems and playwrights lived. Their pieces are often still read or played, because their topics are timeless and never-dying. I can mention such famous personalities as Geoffrey Chaucer, Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Charles Dickens or George Orwell or George Bernard Shaw. Britain of course has its important women who contributed to heritage of British literature. Popular writers were Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf or Agatha Christie.     Nevertheless I dont talk about two most important and probably most world famous British writers. Let me shortly introduce you two unique men – William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde.     William Shakespeare was the greatest playwright who lived in the time of renaissance in England, maybe who ever lived. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. Later he went to London where he was an actor, writer of plays and then he became an owner-partner in running the Globe theatre.     Shakespeare is an innovator of the English language. It is interesting to know that he introduced almost 2000 words to English. His work is famous for the richness of its language. Altogether Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays     Among the most famous of his plays are comedies: Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like It, The Comedy of Erors, Much Ado About Nothing, The Merry Wives of Windsor. In all these comedies female roles are very important.     He also write historical plays, on the basic of chronicles of kings, such as Richard II, Richard III, Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI.     Very popular are also his tragedies. I can not forget to mention Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth or King Lear. Shakespeare also wrote the sonnets.     One of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare is Romeo and Juliet.     Oscar Wilde was one of the most important Irish writers of the 19th century. He was very controversial person so during his life he had many followers but also many enemies. Nevertheless his piece influenced many artists and became never-dying.  And even today he is also often quoted.     He was representative of Aesthetic Movement. Aesthetes were reacting against the conventional art and behaviour of Victorian England. Wilde created the cult of Art for Art’s Sake which proclaimed the importance of form over contents. He wrote two books for children - The Canterville Ghost and The Happy Prince. His famous fairy tales are called The Nightingale and the Rose and The Selfish Giant. His only novel is The Picture of Dorian Grey. It is story about a man who remained forever young, despite the decadent life he led for years, in contrast with his portrait which grew old instead of him. The most famous parts of his work are his comedies which are still widely played. In them Wilde followed the traditional English conversational comedy and achieved fame for their brilliant form, witty satire and amusing situations. All Wilde’s plays contain a criticism of Victorian society, but their success is mainly due to his art of making people laugh by means of easy-going witty dialogues.

The most popular plays are Lady Windermere’s Fan, An Ideal Husband, A Woman of No Importance, and above his masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest.

To sum up I would like to say that I appreciate courage of these authors, because they didn’t be afraid think and write differently that others in their times. In my opinion that is reason why their books are still read and admired.
